Scrap Fabric Bag Strap

My bag broke and, being the Fashion student that I am, I fixed it with some scrap fabric!

Upcycling is a very Pinterest-y thing to do but in my opinion it's a great way to access your creativity and explore what you can do with left overs. Replacing a bag strap isn't exactly super artsy but it saves you money since you don't have to buy a new bag and it also reduces what goes in the bin. I always save little bits of fabric to see what I can do with it all and a quick search on Google or Pinterest can lead to some good ideas and projects.

I made a very simple braided strap to replace the old leather strap. The bag itself is still okay so I didn't see the need to throw it away. I think the bag looks a lot better and definitely more unique with this new strap.

Yes, this is a post on recycling. Not everything is immediately waste once you've used it up. Things like bags and clothes are so easy to throw away once a little thing goes wrong. Do a bit of DIY! Can you sew it yourself? Cover a stain or a rip with some sewing and little buttons and beads. You can get applique pieces really cheaply from the market and add them to anything you want.

A few years ago I made butterfly hair pieces from old fabrics and I've worn them quite a lot so you never really know what you can do with stuff that seems like a waste. I've also made boxes out of magazines and I currently use shoe boxes wrapped in yarn (so they look pretty) to keep my stuff together on my desk.

My Online Portfolio

A lot of editing and refining happened. It took a while but I got there. This is the link:

It's meant to be for potential work placements; places that I apply to can look at this and see my work and I can build up on it for the rest of my university life so that there's a decent body of work to go through by the time I graduate. Hopefully, by then, the whole website itself looks a lot more sleek and professional since I'll have more time to work on it.

It's still not finished by the way. I have more things to add (like one more project - Magpie) so it is still very much a work in progress.

Any feedback on anything - layout, images, fonts, typos - would be useful!

My Portfolio Progress

It's almost the end of my first year at university and I am currently working on a portfolio to send off for work experience placements. It'll be online soon, hopefully by the end of the month since that is my deadline for this mini portfolio project before I go off for my summer holiday.

I've definitely progressed compared to the start of the school year. My drawing has improved and so has my ability to be patient with drawing on a screen with a touchpad...At first I didn't have a mouse and then I bought a mouse and then I forgot my mouse at home for a bit...Hectic life I live, really.

Anyway, this year pretty much sped past like a blur and it sucks that I wasn't able to blog as much as I could. My laptop was also broken for three months so there was that issue too.

The photo above is just one page of my portfolio which, hopefully when it's done, looks better than what it is now. Not kidding. It isn't impressive. Still working on it. Once it's up, I'll be sure to link it here somewhere and share what I've spent nine months of my life doing.

If I had the time, I would have made a spectacular pie chart on my university expectations and the reality but, since I don't, I'll just have to make do with sharing the percentages.

University Expectations:

    • Lectures                     25% of my time
    • Studio sessions          30% of my time
    • Study time                 20% of my time
    • Free time                   10% of my time
    • Sleep                          15% of my time

University Reality:
    • Lectures                      5% of my time
    • Studio sessions         25% of my time
    • Study time                45% of my time
    • Free time                  10% of my time
    • Sleep                           5% of my time
Sleep, like for most university students, isn't a high priority. Sounds awful. It is. Don't be me.

Project Planning And Some Upcycled Boxes

Okay, so I might be able to scrape some time for my own projects outside of university! I have the fabric and the equipment (and the slightly better sewing skills) so I'm thinking of making more things as well as altering some clothes to just practise a bit more. By making stuff that fits me, I'm also helping my wardrobe grow. If I know what I want to wear then why not just make it? I hope I can start soon.

My room here is a mess. There is no space on my desk and it was all because I had no boxes to keep things together. I bought two pairs of shoes from Boohoo last week and they arrived ton. day and it gave me the great idea of doing some recycling. It was pretty easy to do. I just got a lot of yarn and spun it around and around the shoe boxes until it was completely covered.

It was a fun little thing to do and all I needed was a shoe box, yarn and double sided tape.

Cute, right?

I had so much yarn I didn't know what to do with. I'm also better at this whole DIY thing. Those magazine boxes that I made a few years ago looked so trashy compared to this.

I'm Alive, Laptop Broke, Busy Life

I miss blogging...

It's been a while.  Not that my presence on the internet matters, but I do miss having my little space to sided but a chat. My laptop is fixed now, though! After three months I am back online without having to go to the library. My phone kept me going.

So, I am just about finished with the last project at university. It's a good one and I do like what I've done. The project was a white project so we couldn't use a lot of colour (20% of the outcome at most) on what we were making.

The process took a while and I decided to use wire which I then had to spray paint white from green... It took 2 cans of spray paint and a tube of acrylic paint but I did it - just about.

Here are the photos that my model (my friend Emily) would let me share online. They were taken by my amazing boyfriend:

For a return to blogging, I know this isn't much. I have been doing something with my life, I haven't spend EVERY day in bed asleep. As a typical university student, I have to admit, I did do that often enough but it hasn't affected my work.

The project we did last term was...well...I wasn't happy with my grade really. I was 3 marks off of a 2.1 which I know I could have achieved but I tried my best - I put so many hours into embroidery and fabric printing. It is what it is. It's in the past and I can make up for it at some point. I hope that this project pans out a bit better.
