I Have An Asymmetric Bob

First of all, I apologize for not posting a Trendy Tuesday post today. I was at a friend's for the night and I'm going back today so this is just something quick to share.

I cut my hair! I was growing my hair for a really long time and it just would not grow fast enough. The days have been ridiculously hot lately and my neck has just been drowning in all of the sweat thanks to my thick hair.

I started looking at some haircuts for the summer and I just really loved the idea of having an asymmetric bob since it's something that has a bit more of an interest to it for the summer.

I cut my hair myself since I don't trust hairdresses at all. I looked at pictures on Pinterest and videos on YouTube so I had a bit more guidance on what to do. It took a long time and a lot of refining over the next day. I couldn't cut the back of my hair by myself because it's really short so I couldn't see it. I got one of my friends to help me whilst I was sleeping over; I guided her on where to cut with my fingers. It really was a two-man job.

I look a little bit different now. Even I can see that and it's really weird. I don't have naturally straight hair so I have to straighten it every time I want to go out. I just leave it in all it's wavy glory when I'm at home doing nothing.

I really want a hair feather or another feather earring to wear with it. Both of my feather earrings are now broken thanks to my careless friends... I've gotten over it, sort of.

That's all for now. Stay beautiful x

It's Summer!

This is my last summer holiday before uni and it feels a bit weird. Yesterday was my last school and it was a really quiet day apart from the thunder and lightning in the morning. I honestly believe that Thor is on his period. Anyway, it was extremely hot (30 degrees Celcius) so it was obvious that no one was going to do any work in their lessons. I spent my Maths lesson browsing Tickld and waiting for my coursework interview; I was the last person so I had a lot of time to do nothing.

I had free time for the next two periods of school so I went to Art to try and continue with my sculpture. The roses that I put on it yesterday was atrocious so I had to fix that. I made the layers of the roses the night before and then put them together yesterday. That bit is pretty much finished now; there's still one more rose that I have to stick onto the right side. I am planning to drop the subject but my teacher said I can come  back after the summer to finish it off. The mannequin I was using was covered in paint so it doesn't do the sculpture much justice.

In English, we had an air conditioned room which gave us a nice break from the heat outside. I seriously felt like I was going to melt or drown in my own sweat... Only half of the class was in the lesson yesterday so we didn't do much.

Last night, my fan, the coffee I drank and the mirror I made in my Product Design class (it's pink with glitter on top. There was no purple paint...) gave me some entertainment to get through the heat. I had way too much fun with it on SnapChat. If you don't have me on that thing then add me (thatpurmonster). I might talk to you. We had more thunder and lightning last night as well.

I haven't really decided on how I should fill my summer holidays. I'm still jobless and, therefore, moneyless so I'm pretty limited on what I can actually do. My friends and I are going to have some barbecues at some point but in between those I don't know what to do with my time. Probably sleep. Yeah... That sounds like a good idea.

Trendy Tuesday: The Monochrome Trend

Black and white. A checkerboard. A zebra. Old movies. Wherever the trend came from, I'm thankful for it. I love wearing black and white. The last Trendy Tuesday post talked about the colour "grey." This week, it's all about its parents.
The monochrome trend is not just making headway in fashion - it's impacting interiors too. www.amtico.com #flooring #monochrome #blackandwhite

SS14 Monochrome Trend

Wearing monochrome clothing makes me feel like a drawing sometimes. I wear a lot of accent colours - mainly purple or red - with monochrome clothing and it looks like I've come out of a piece of paper. I have a lot of white shirts with black writing or silhouette pictures on them and I love them. It's just gives you a really casual look.

"Monochrome" is as much of a catwalk trend as it is a high street trend. Lots of catwalks that I've seen have had monochrome somewhere. It's perfect for anytime of the year so it only makes sense that it turned into an actual fad at one point this year.

It's not just clothing that's been affected as well. Interior design is becoming a bigger thing now and fashion trends do affect it just as much as it affect everything else. We're always trying to impress people more and more. Homes have become another way to show off and reflect yourself (and, of course, a nice background is better for a photo). Traditional looks aren't so traditional anymore. People want to be more iconic.

Personally, the monochrome interiors are something that I can see in my own house whenever I get a place to myself. I doubt that'll happen anytime soon, though, but when it does I will be living in design heaven. I want my own place to look like a piece of art in itself.

I'm not really one for patterns and wild designs (if you haven't noticed already). I prefer the simpler looks. Simple and boring aren't the same thing. You can dress in patterned clothing and still not have that wow factor around you. You have to make it work. Going back to the basics (like monochrome) just shows you what people can do with so little. Two colours. That's all there is to it and the amount that you can do with it is endless.

And, FYI, four of my friends and I came into school yesterday all wearing monochrome tops... I had my checkered top on, two of them had striped shirts and one had a white blouse with black polka dots.

Last School Week 2014

This week is the last school week before the summer holidays! I don't like how the summer holidays are so short but then again we do get quite a lot of breaks during the school terms as well...

Anyway, this week I'm just going to try and get everything done: the first part of my Product Design coursework; my first sculpture for my Art coursework; my Maths coursework (maths shouldn't have coursework!); and I'm going to try and finish reading the "A Dance with Dragons" since I've borrowed it from a friend. I only have a little bit left to read but, because I'm so pushed for time with everything else, I haven't really had the chance to read except at midnight. I get through it a chapter or two a night and I only have about 200 pages left to read. I want to finish that so I can have the last book to read over the summer. 30-50 pages a night should be enough to get it done. I can do this!

I didn't do a Trendy Tuesday post last week since I was out that day but I should be able to get one done for this Tuesday. I don't know what it will be on... probably the monochrome trend. Most of my clothes are black and white so I might as well talk about that.

I really hope the weather is nice this week. It was sports day at school yesterday and it rained pretty much all morning. It stopped just as school began and, since it was dry the whole week, the school field was dry enough for sports day could go ahead. It was still cloudy the rest of the day but at least it wasn't pouring down with rain. I spent yesterday doing Maths coursework with some of my friends. We were all inside for the majority of the day but we were allowed to go to the field during our break and lunch. My other friends were all helping out with the events. I really wanted to help with the track events! Mainly because I wanted to see my friends in the lower years run and some of the teachers as well. Oh well... It really does suck that I wasn't able to do it.

The Summer Tag

Hey! I was nominated by my friend across the sea - Guilianna Marie - to do this post so I'm just going to get on with it!

Summer and winter are probably my two favourite seasons. I don't like the other two because they're like transition periods between the seasons and the weather decides that it can do what it wants during those times. It's not fun. One day it's raining and the next it's like the Sahara desert has come to visit.

Question Time!

1. What is your favourite thing about summer?
My favourite thing about summer is a barbecue. I love barbecues. There's always food (duh!), music, and cold drinks around me and it's a really nice way to spend time with friends. Sitting there with a J2O in my hand and a pork kebab on the other with the sun blazing down on me with an occasional breeze... What more can you ask for?

2. Do you have a favourite summer drink?
Mocha or caramel frappuccinos! I usually get them from Starbucks but as long as I have one from somewhere I'm happy until that drink is gone.

Starbucks frappuccino

3. Is there a location you like to go each summer?
Not really. As long as there's a campsite or caravan site nearby with a sandy beach, a pool, mini golf, a pier and nice food, our family will go there at some point during the summer. Being inside a caravan is fun but, because it's such a small space, you're forced to be nearer to people. Everything is so close together.

4. Favourite look for the summer?
You can never go wrong with denim shorts in the summer. I like to wear my dark denim shorts with a loose top and either my canvas shoes or my sandal wedges quite a lot or, if I didn't feel like shaving my legs the night before, my maxi skirt with a crop top along with my sandal wedges as well. And, of course I have to wear one of my anklets!

shorts shorts shorts, summer summer summer :) I'm going to get the legs for these for this summer.
5. Dresses or skirts?
Oooh, that's a tough one. I don't really mind  but on certain days I'd rather wear my skater skirt rather than a dress. However, I really am a shorts-all-day-everyday kind of girl.

6. Sandals or ballet pumps?
I think we've established the answer to this in the fourth question.

7. Do you prefer to wear your hair up or down for the summer?
Lately, I've been wearing it up in a bun or ponytail more often. It's just easier to manage and it stops you from having a sweaty neck. My hair is ridiculously thick so, usually, I get it trimmed and thinned for the summer. I'm too lazy to go and get that done now and I don't trust hairdressers anymore. I manage my own hair now and I don't have thinning scissors nor would I be able to do it correctly if I did.

8. Deep smokey eyes or bold lips?
Neither. I tend to wear little to no make-up during the summer because I can usually feel it melt off my face during the day and it's not comfortable.

9. Favourite perfume for the summer?
My Red Delicious perfume from DKNY. I got it on my 16th birthday and there's still about half of the bottle left. It's a big bottle!

10. Last but not least, favourite music for the summer?
Okay, so my phone is a douchebag and refuses to play my music on it. Since I got it, I've been stuck with the radio. I haven't really listened to anything I usually listen to since then and my ears pretty much accept whatever noise they hear through the headphones. I listen to Radio 1 a LOT now just because it's hilarious!

TIME TO TAG!
CARYS! Get your butt on your blog. You haven't done anything in a long time so do this!

Anyone else who has read this is also tagged.

A Day Out: V&A Design Museum

Okay, before I get on to the actual post there are two things that I want to say first:

  • 10,000 pageviews! What?
  • And I'm sorry I didn't get a Trendy Tuesday post up today. I was out and, by the time I got home earlier, I was too tired to do anything productive. I went to the V&A so I pretty much spent the day walking around.
__________________
I went to the V&A on a school trip today! It was pretty good. Our Product Design class went to get images and ideas for our projects but I was there to do that AND collect images for my art project AND for Extended Project at school AND for my university portfolio.

So, obviously, I went to the Fashion exhibition first which was like a time line of clothing, mainly women's, throughout the ages. It started off with dresses from the Renaissance to the industrial revolution then the wars and every decade from then until now. Seeing everything on a display like that made all of the changes and the evolution of clothing really obvious and you can see where the influences and changes came from and why.

I spent more time in here than I did in the rest of the museum. I was at each display staring and reading and then staring some more before I moved on the next one. Time ran away from me and, before I knew it, I was there for a good 45 minutes or so. The actual exhibition is really tiny; it goes around the edges of a round room. The middle of the room had its own exhibition of wedding dresses. You had to pay to get it and I had no money. Even if I did, photographs were not permitted inside. There was also an exhibit on Italian Fashion but that had the same rules to it.

There was a lot in that exhibit and I liked how iconic designers like Vivienne Westwood (my idol) and Christian Dior were both recognised inside for their contributions to the fashion world. Dior's idea of "new look" clothing is what started the trend of synthetic colours being used in clothing; before that, people wore darker, natural colours that were easier to come by. Since the war was over and Britain was part of the winning side, he wanted the colours of clothing to reflect the atmosphere.

This dress wasn't actually in the exhibition - it was in a different one. I think it was part of the Asian exhibits. Yeah... Anyway, it's inspired by origami and I think it looks awesome. The skirt is made of strips of fabric instead of one big piece.

After I went to the Fashion exhibit and had lunch with my friends, we all ventured around the museum to see what else was out there. We found a room filled with glassworks so, naturally, I went to the big wall mirror.

All of the pictures at the bottom are part of a Modern Design exhibit that we went to at the end of the trip. Our whole class went there together and these are some of the things that I really liked.

This was part of a display of trends that were around (or are still around) now. The exhibit next to it had Flappy Bird on an iPhone. This was a display of nude colours and how the shoe trend came about. I did read the placard that went with the display but the reasons and explanations have escaped me right now.

The top above was made by Vivienne Westwood. She's an artist. I consider her as more than just a fashion designer and all of my friends think that I'm crazy. To be honest, she is but that's why she's so good at making innovative and weird designs.

I really like the design on these drawers. The actual thing is taller than me and I took this photo purely because it was something a bit different yet simple.

I took about 100 photos altogether - these are just some of the ones that I really liked.

Paper Roses

In my Art class, I'm currently studying dress sculptures. Right now, I'm focused on making a corset entirely out of paper.

Since roses are such a big part of female culture - they symbolise romance and lust and are associated with women - I decided to put one on my sculpture. Right now, I'm studying Carrie Ann Schumacher (her dress sculptures are amazing! I'm not too sure on how I feel about her paintings, though) so I've decided to follow her idea of making a sculpture out of novels.

I made the rose above first just to see what it would look like since I've never made one before. I searched how to make one on YouTube. All of the tutorials were basically the same with some variations in folding and cutting. The principle was the same, though - cut out the same flower shape multiple times and take off a bit of a section on each one to make the rose 3D.

I'm pretty proud of the actual outcome when it came to actual novel rose. I had to glue pages together so they were big enough to cut and fold. It easier to bend the edges as well.

Whilst I was making the first rose, I got a paper cut when I was creasing the edges. It hurt SO much. It goes from the top of my index finger to halfway down the left of the top joint. Paper is dangerous! I managed to get spray paint on it the next day and it still hadn't closed over by then so that was a pretty excruciating moment for me. I did a weird dance of panic when it happened since I couldn't figure out what to do next; my body was still trying to get over the pain first. It hurt that much! The bruise on my leg from walking into a table clamp last week still hasn't completely healed yet either. For an accident prone person, you'd think that I'd be able to heal quickly by now...

Anyway, I can't put the roses into my sketchbook, obviously, so the first one I made was donated to my friends. They actually took care of it whilst they had it and when they decided to return it to me I punched it flat and then ripped the petals off one by one. It was pretty sadistic now that I think about it. The novel rose is currently pinned to my home-made noticeboard. That one is too beautiful to destroy.

The Highlights Of My Life Last Week

I haven't done a personal post in a week. I've been so busy with work and trying to do lots of things at once that I just forget about this.

So, I don't really have anything specific to say so why don't we just reflect on the week that I've had? Yes? Good. Okay.

One of the A-Levels that I am currently taking is Product Design and we've spent most of the last few weeks either making a wooden frame for a mirror or researching products that we could make for our final project. I really want to make a wedding dress but it has to be innovative. I also had back-up ideas - a make-up organizer and a luggage bag. All in all, I've changed my design proposal about 5 times at least because the technology teachers just can't agree on what's best for me; I feel like I've caused conflicts between a really close-knit bunch of people... I've got a pretty good one going now and I've already invested time into the first part of my project so I really hope I don't have to change it AGAIN!

We all know that I am atrocious when it comes to anything other than graphics or textiles. I am terrible when it comes to Resistant Materials. Other than researching out projects, our teachers have set us the task of making a frame that looks like a splatter made of wood. Everyone has these really nice frames that are a really nice quality and are also really neat and smooth and then there's me: My frame looks terrible and the edges are so rigid and bumpy. I put in so much time into making the sides really smooth and I just couldn't. I even glued the sides wrong... One was upside down so we had to adjust the shape of my mirror from a rectangle to a square with a little tab on one side. It was bad. I also walked into a clamp that was on the dge of a table and now I have this massive bruise on my leg. It's still there and this happened on Tuesday!!!

Every Wednesday, I have rounders at the end of the day with my friends. The school makes us do exercise. It's hilarious! My friends and I can take the game way too seriously and things get really out of hand. It goes from a normal rounders game to a disaster and we all just end up dying of laughter by the end.

Yesterday I helped out with a sixth form induction day in the library. Because of these people, current sixth formers were not able to use the library at all for a few days and that annoyed me. I don't like studying anywhere else when I need a computer. I would have been okay with it otherwise. Anyway, since I did volunteering inside and outside of school, I held the stall for it. By myself. I was meant to be with a friend but they were on a trip. It was okay, though, since more of my friends were on other stalls in front of me.

Right now I'm just relaxing. Watching Dexter. Drawing. Reading a little bit too. Maybe I'll play League of Legends later. I'm terrible at it but it kills time. I've done all the work I want to this week.

That's all for now. Stay beautiful x
